Important USCIS Update for Applicants From Travel Ban Countries

USCIS has announced a major policy change that may affect immigration applications filed by people from certain countries covered by the updated travel ban.

What Changed?

Starting January 1, 2026, USCIS placed a pause (hold) on most immigration applications filed by people from countries listed in Presidential Proclamation 10998. This pause applies to applications that are already pending and means USCIS will not make decisions on them for now. There is no set timeline for when this pause will end. The hold will stay in place until USCIS leadership decides to lift or change it.

Why Is This Happening?

USCIS says it is conducting a full review of its security, screening, and vetting procedures for applications from these countries. During this review, applications covered by the travel ban will remain on hold.

Are Any Applications Still Being Processed?

Yes. Some applications are not affected by the pause. These include:

  • Green card replacement cards

  • Certificates of citizenship or naturalization

  • Certain work permits, including:

    • Asylum-based work permits

    • Limited parole-based work permits

    • Limited deferred action work permits

The list of exemptions is very specific, so not every application qualifies.

What About Applications That Were Already Approved?

USCIS has also announced that it may re-review immigration benefits that were approved on or after January 20, 2021, for people from the affected countries. This means some individuals could see delays, requests for more information, or additional review, even if their case was already approved.

What Does This Mean for You?

If you are from a country affected by the travel ban:

  • Your case may take much longer than expected

  • USCIS may pause action on your application with no clear end date

  • Previously approved benefits may be reviewed again

What Should You Do Now?

If you believe this policy may affect you:

  • Be prepared for longer and uncertain processing times

  • Avoid making travel or work plans based on normal timelines
