Ismail Shahtakhtinski IS Law Firm PLLC lawyer serving DC VA MD area immigration attorney personal injuryCONSULTATION FAQ

What is a legal consultation?

You are meeting with an experienced immigration attorney who will go step by step with you through your legal issue and give you sound legal advice on how to proceed. The attorney will review the facts of your case, answer any questions you may have, discuss the merits of your case, and advise you the realistic probable result, so that you have options on how best to proceed with your case.

There is no obligation or expectation that you will hire our firm or that the attorney will take your case. We want you to have time to consider your decision since choosing a right attorney for your case is very important.

How does booking a consultation work?

You will be given a secure link through our case management system CLIO where you can choose a date and time available, process online payment and book your consultation. The calendar is based on first come, first serve basis and our attorney’s availability.

Is it online, by phone, or in-person?

Currently, due to the pandemic, all consultations are offered either by phone or online. You can indicate your preference, at the time of scheduling your consultation.

What is the cost for a consultation?

Consultations cost $250.00. This is a flat fee and cover up to one hour of consultation with our attorney. If you hire our attorney to represent your case after the consultation, $250 will be deducted from the total cost of legal fees.

Can I get a refund if the attorney determines that I do not have a good case?

There is generally no refund for a consultation.  Our attorney will answer all your questions based on his experience and expertise.  You will have a better understanding of your options and what are possible next steps to take (or not to take) in your case.  You may also receive an answer that there is nothing can be done in your case due to unavailability of visas or other reasons.  However, knowing and confirming this can be an important step in your immigration case.

How long is a consultation?

Consultations are booked for up to one hour, but often take less than one hour. The attorney will do everything to answer all your questions related to your matter. If it takes more than one hour, we may need to get back to you with a follow-up call or email.

What’s next after booking a consultation?

You will receive a confirmation text or email.  You should take time to organize and pull together important paperwork, so that you come to the consultation prepared to answer any questions that the attorney may have about your case.

What if I forgot to ask something or have follow-up questions?

Your consultation fee includes any follow-up questions within 2 business days after your consultation, provided that the new questions relate to the same matter. For any new matters or subsequent legal advice, you will need to schedule another consultation. To remind you, your consultation fee, even if you have multiple consultations, is applied as a credit towards (deducted from) future legal fees if you retain our firm for handling the matter about which you received your consultation.

Can multiple persons book one consultation?

Generally, each person must book a separate consultation. We make exceptions in some circumstances if the two cases are very similar or closely related. If you would like to verify, please contact our office.

What if I need to reschedule?

If you need to reschedule your consultation for any reason, please contact our office as soon as possible.  There are many people who are waiting to have their cases consulted with our attorney and the sooner we hear from you, we can open the spot to other people who are urgently needed a consultation, especially if there are legal deadlines involved.

Can attorney look over the immigration forms that I prepared and help me file my own case?

We cannot review and approve the forms that you prepared on your own.  We are also not allowed to help you self-represent yourself.  Ethical obligations do not allow attorneys to assist non-attorneys in preparing legal documents.  If you decide to hire our firm to represent your case, you must consent to the attorney’s representation in your case and sign a fee agreement.
